Tiller School Covid-19 Information and Guidance

(Updated August 28, 2023)

Tiller School is committed to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our students and staff to learn and work. We continue to follow CDC guidance for schools, to clean and sanitize all student areas daily, and to facilitate thorough handwashing before snacks, mealtimes, and throughout the day. Tiller School has also installed portable air purifiers in every classroom, staff office, and meeting room on campus.

Please help us to maintain a safe and healthy school environment by following the guidelines below.

Please Stay Home When Sick

Any student who is experiencing any COVID-like symptoms should STAY HOME. Students who report to school with symptoms will be sent home and families will be encouraged to seek medical advice.

Typical symptoms of Covid-19 include:

• Sore throat

• Cough

• Fever or chills

• Fatigue

• New loss of taste or smell

• Muscle or body aches

• Diarrhea

• Nausea or vomiting

• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

• Headaches

• Runny Nose

• Congestion

*If you are unsure whether or not your child’s symptoms are significant enough to keep them home from school, please contact your medical provider or our school nurse for advice.

If your child develops symptoms of Covid-19 testing is recommended as soon as possible after they begin.

What to do if your child has been exposed to Covid-19?

In accordance with CDC guidance we are no longer requiring students or staff who have been exposed to Covid-19 to quarantine at home. As long as the student remains symptom-free and is not testing positive for Covid-19, they may attend school as usual. We recommend that students with a known exposure wear a mask for up to 10 days following their exposure, but it is not required.

If there is a known exposure, you may also choose to keep your child home to quarantine for a period of time and these absences will be considered “excused.” You should notify the school and contact your child’s teacher for information about school work during this time.

What to do if your child tests positive for Covid-19?

In accordance with CDC guidance, any student who has tested positive for COVID-19 through any method (home test, rapid test, PCR test) will be required to isolate at home for 5 days after the date of their positive test (or from the date when symptoms first started). Students may return on the 6th day as long as symptoms are resolving and they have been fever-free for 24 hours. Students are required to wear a mask at school upon their return through day 10 following their first positive test or onset of symptoms or if you have access to antigen tests, you should consider using them. With two sequential negative tests 48 hours apart, you may remove your mask sooner than day 10.

Note: If your antigen test results are positive, you may still be infectious and a mask is required.

See our Isolation and Quarantine Guideline Graphic above.

Families should notify the front office of a positive Covid-19 diagnosis right away at (252) 728-1995 and contact their child’s teacher for information on schoolwork during their isolation period.

We also recommend that families notify any personal close-contacts of their child’s positive test result. A close contact is anyone who has been within 6 feet of them for 15 minutes or more during the 2 days before symptoms started or a positive test result. Tiller School and the Carteret County Health Department are no longer conducting contact tracing for individual cases of Covid-19.
